At this point, the future in our herd lies in the Nubian and LaMancha breeds. Their milk is rich and creamy with the highest available butterfat content. Hight butterfat equals the opportunity to make butter! Our herd consists of 2 bucks, 2 wethers and 5 does/doelings. Our does have been staggered in their breeding to supply us with fresh milk year round. We currently have 1 doe that freshened at the beginning of March and one that freshened in mid-April. We only breed our does once a year and allow them to dry off when they are pregnant. We do not dehorn our goats. We feel it is cruel and inhumane. They were given horns for protection and we don't have the right to take that away from them. We have never had a problem with goats maiming each other or getting tangled in the fence. We have had our goats for almost 4 years. We never handle them by their horns and they have never attempted to use them on us. MEET THE HERD Our resident Bucks: ![]() This is baby Rue. He was born March 3, 2008. He is 3/4's Nubian and 1/4 Oberhasli. ![]() This is our newest buck, Comfrey. He was born December 21, 2007. He is full blooded Nubian. A huge thanks to Robyn LaMotte of Shepherd's Dominion and Kelli Lyons of 4 Legged Farm Farm for this handsome little fellow. Our resident Does: This is our newest milker, Clover. She is a first time freshener and is producing an outstanding amount of sweet milk for us. She kidded in March and was not milked ever until we brought her home. We are getting about 1/2 gallon a day from her. She is a mix of LaMancha, Nubian and Alpine. ![]() Cinnamon was born March 1, 2007. This is her first freshening. Her son is Rue. She is half Oberhasli and half Nubian. Her milk is rich and creamy. ![]() Lavender was born March 1, 2007. She is Cinnamon's sister. We chose not to breed her last fall due to her age and size. She will be bred this fall. Calendula came from the same herd as Clover and Chamomile. She is half LaMancha. We hope to breed her late this fall for a June 2009 freshening. Chamomile is also half LaMancha. We hope to breed her late this fall as well. The other boys (our wethers): ![]() Oberon was born on the Summer Solstice 2004. He is the protector. We joke about renting him out for Goat Rides as he is HUGE! He is going to Mill's Apple Farm to be a part of their petting zoo soon. |
